Shop Visit or Mobile Service? Choosing the Right Welder Repair

In the Peace Country, a machine that needs work is often a long way from the nearest repair shop, and moving it costs time on its own. That is why we do both: we work in our shop in Grande Prairie, and our mobile team brings the shop to you. Which one is right depends on the machine and on the problem. Here is how to think it through.

When the shop is the better choice

Some work is simply easier and more thorough in a shop. We have the bench space, the tools and the controlled conditions to open a machine up and work on it properly without the weather or the clock working against us.

  • Full restorations, including deep internal cleaning and complete engine overhauls.
  • Repairs that need a machine opened up on a bench, with components removed and tested.
  • Diagnostics on a machine that has several problems at once.
  • Smaller units that are easy to move and load.
  • Work where you would like the machine tested end to end before it leaves.

If a machine can be loaded into a truck without much fuss, the shop is often the straightforward choice, and our location at Unit 17 102, 11231-97 Ave in Grande Prairie is easy to reach from the highways.

When the mobile team makes more sense

Sometimes the machine cannot come to us, or should not. Bringing a heavy engine-driven unit out of a work site, or taking a welder off a job that is in progress, can cost more in lost time than the repair itself. In those cases our mobile service team goes to the machine.

  • Machines that are mounted on trucks, trailers or skids and hard to move.
  • Equipment on a site where pulling it would shut down the work.
  • Diagnostics where you need someone to see the problem in its real working conditions.
  • On-site calibration, where we can work around your schedule.
  • Webasto heaters installed in vehicles and equipment parked in your yard.

Some repairs begin on site and finish in the shop. A mobile visit can tell us exactly what is wrong, and we will say so plainly if the fix is best done back at the shop.

The reverse happens too. A machine that arrives at the shop and turns out to have a simple electrical fault can sometimes be sorted quickly, while one that looked minor on the phone turns out to need a bench and a full teardown. We would rather work out which one you have early than send a truck out or have you haul a machine in for nothing. Describing the symptom well is the best way to help us get that call right the first time.

Think about the cost of moving the machine itself, too. Loading, hauling and unloading a heavy unit takes people, equipment and time, and every hour a crew spends doing that is an hour they are not welding. Sometimes the cheapest repair is the one where the technician travels instead of the machine.

Where the mobile team goes

Our mobile team covers the Peace Country: Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge, Valleyview, Spirit River, Wembley, Sexsmith and the country in between. If your site is somewhere along that stretch, or near it, call and ask. Tell us where the machine is and how to find it, and we will work out what makes sense.

How to prepare for a site visit

A little preparation makes a mobile visit go much further. The more we know before we leave the shop, the more likely we are to arrive with the right parts and tools.

  • Give us the make, model and serial number, and a photo of the data plate if you can.
  • Describe the symptom and when it started, as specifically as you can.
  • Tell us exactly where the machine is and how to get there, including any gate access, site orientation or contact person.
  • Park the machine on level, solid ground with room to open it and work around it.
  • Clear the area around the machine and shut it down safely before we arrive, unless the problem only shows while it runs.
  • Have the operator available, since they usually know best what the machine has been doing.
  • Leave the machine accessible: unlocked covers, cleared cabs and no equipment parked against it.

Not sure which one you need?

Just call. Describe the machine, the problem and where it is, and we will tell you whether it makes more sense to bring it in or have the mobile team come out. There is no wrong way to start the conversation, and a five-minute call often saves a wasted trip in either direction.
