Getting Your Webasto Heater Ready for a Grande Prairie Winter
A heater that fails on the first cold morning costs you a lot more than one that was checked in the fall.

Winters in Grande Prairie are brutal on equipment. Hydraulics get stiff, batteries lose their nerve and engines that start easily in September turn stubborn once the cold sets in. A Webasto heater takes a lot of that pain away, but only if it is installed properly and working when you need it. The time to find out whether it is working is now, not on the first morning when everything else is frozen too.
Why fall is the time to deal with it
Heater problems tend to show up at the worst possible moment. They sit unnoticed all summer, then the first hard cold snap arrives and everyone in the Peace Country wants a heater serviced in the same week. Getting yours looked at while the weather is still manageable means fewer surprises and an easier time getting booked in.
It also gives you room to do it right. If a part needs to be ordered or a vehicle needs to be set aside for a day, that is a lot simpler in October than in the middle of a cold snap.
Think about what the heater is protecting. A cold engine is hard on starters, batteries and oil, and a cab that never warms up is hard on the people working in it. For fleets and crews who have to be moving at a set time, a working heater is part of getting the day started on schedule.
What a good installation looks like
Many heater problems trace back to the installation, not the heater. A unit that was mounted in the wrong spot, or hooked up with a rushed fuel line or poorly routed exhaust, will cause trouble for as long as it is in service. A good installation pays attention to the details that are easy to skip:
- Mounting the unit where it is protected and has the clearance it needs.
- Routing the fuel supply cleanly and securely, away from heat and moving parts.
- Keeping the combustion air intake and exhaust clear, correctly routed and protected from snow and debris.
- Running ducting so the heat goes where it is useful, as in the cab or the engine bay.
- Wiring the unit properly, with solid connections and the right protection, and mounting the controller where the operator can reach it.
We handle Webasto sales, installation and service, so we can help with a new heater or look over one that is already in your equipment.
Common faults we see
These are the symptoms that most often send people looking for a tech:
- The heater will not start, or starts and then shuts itself off.
- Smoke, a strong fuel smell or poor combustion from the exhaust.
- Weak heat output, even though the heater seems to be running.
- A fault code or warning light on the controller.
- A heater that works some days and not others, which often means a power, fuse or connection problem.
Causes vary. Low battery voltage, a blocked air intake or exhaust, fuel supply trouble, carbon buildup and a worn ignition part are among the usual suspects. If the controller is showing a fault code, write it down before you clear it. It is a big head start for the technician.
Preventative maintenance that pays off
A heater is a combustion appliance, and like any engine it runs better when someone looks after it. A preventative maintenance visit lets a technician inspect the unit, check the fuel and air paths, look over the electrical connections and spot wear before it becomes a failure. Our Webasto service includes preventative maintenance, and it is the cheapest kind of repair because the problem never has to happen.
Between visits, a few habits help. Keep the intake and exhaust clear of snow and mud. Make sure the battery and charging system are healthy, since a heater leans on both. And do not ignore small changes in how it starts or sounds.
Run it before you need it
One of the simplest things you can do is run the heater for a cycle in the fall, well before it is cold. If it fires up and puts out heat, you have confidence going in. If it struggles or throws a code, you have time to fix it. A heater that has sat idle for months is more likely to have a problem than one that has been used, and finding out early is the whole point.
